Meet New Dallas Cowboys Head Coach: Wade Phillips

Meet Wade Phillips (born June 21, 1947 in Orange, Texas) is reported by http://www.ESPN.com to be the current head coach for the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys. He is also a former head coach of the Denver Broncos, where his record was 16-16, and the Buffalo Bills, where he was 29-19 and led the Bills to the playoffs in 2 out of 3 seasons. His winning percentage as a head coach is 56.25. He is considered one of the great defensive minds in football, and served as defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers from 2004-2006. Wade is the son of former NFL coach Bum Phillips. (Source Wikipedia)

Its an early morning decision that I honestly was not prepared for. It is quite a shock, after looking at Wade Phillips early and not moving on him back them he had fallen off my radar. I fully was expecting Jerry Jones to go in another direction, like Ron Rivera or even Lovie Smith.

DOH! This is reason #2,645,845 from Jerry Jones (#1 was firing Coach Landry) that the Bears have gained my ultimate allegiance. The day TO was signed it "broke my back" and I put on my Chicago cap. Of course, I still bleed blue and silver.

There is a reason that the Boys haven't won a playoff game in 11 years... the GM.

The Missional Position said...

Yeah, I was sleepy when the news came down and had not processed it yet. This is not a move I am thrilled with. It lacks excitement. It just seems like a good ole boy kinda move. More thoughts later.

Mickey,

I know you probably wrote that without your wife's, the English teachers approval, so I felt I had to alert you to the error of your ways. I know Wade Morris, played golf with him a few times, but Wade Phillips is no Wade Morris, and I am sure Wade Morris is no Wade Phillips.

As to the hire, my hope is that it is to allow Jason Garrett to develop as a coach and one day to be the lead dog. Though I guess Jerry will never give up that position. I think it will improve the defense greatly. Wade has an incredible defensive mentality that will take advantage of D. Ware and the other cogs that have been put into place. I think when it came down to it Jerry knew he could not bring in someone who would totally revamp the defense like Rivera, Smith, even Turner who has always run a 4-3 and he did not want to bring in someone who would not allow Garrett to develop like Turner or Caldwell. I would rather have seen Singletary get the position but I realize experience and holding Garrett back would have been a problem there.

Man, I just realized I know too much about sports.

Booo Cowboys... Gooo Texans!

Jason Garrett was a serviceable backup QB and will be a serviceable backup coach... FOR LIFE.
